A Speedmaster 145.022-69 “Straight Writing” with a nice story

Today I have the pleasure to show you a 145.022-69 “Straight Writing” that I have just bought from its first and only owner.  It was given to him by his mother and grandparents, on the occasion of his first communion.

The watch still has its original papers, dated April 20, 1973.

The warranty booklet was printed in 1970, which is perfectly consistent for a 145.022-69.

The Speedmaster can be seen in several vintage pictures kindly provided by the previous owner.

Below, a photography of the various gifts he received at his communion.  We can clearly see the famous “crater box” that was originally delivered with the Straight Writing.  Unfortunately, the latter has been lost.

September 1973, on his ninth birthday.

The two pictures below were taken between 1978 and 1981.

The watch is in beautiful original condition, with its “step” dial and “dot next to 90” bezel.  The tritium indexes have developed a light patina, often seen on early 1970’s examples.

This rare reference is called “Straight Writing” because of the writing “The First Watch Worn On the Moon” horizontally engraved below the Omega logo.  It is the first Speedmaster model referring to the conquest of the Moon.

The caliber 861 is in very good condition.  It was fully serviced at Omega Benelux in 2009.

A letter from the first owner comes with the watch, in which he explains its provenance.

Vintage Speedmasters all have a story, most of the time forgotten.  This one told us its own, the rest of which has yet to be written.
